Round Played: with Morrie and Nicole Smith –
By Wayne Halm –
Some things are worth doing twice –
My buddy Morrie Smith and his daughter Nicole flew up from Auckland, New Zealand to play golf with me. Yeah, I was excited.

On October 17th 2015 we drove up to Princeville to play the Makai Course. We planned to ride their Golf Boards, but the weather altered our plans. It was too wet to take the Golf Boards out, so we rode them around the parking lot for a while.
.
.
The Golf Boards didn’t go out but we did – in the rain! Wait, that might be misleading, the rain did briefly slack off to “shower status” a couple of times.
However, once we were soaked to the skin and accepted that our normal shots weren’t going to work, we began to have fun. There is something to the “camaraderie in the face of adversity” idea.
This round brought up a question, “Do you think rain soaked old guy clothes weigh significantly more that rain soaked young woman clothes?” I suspect they do. Because the next day Nicole was her normal vivacious self, while Morrie and I were content to do “sit around” stuff.
The weather improved and on October 19th 2015 Morrie and I felt up to challenging the Kauai Lagoons course. Events proved we were not up to it, but we felt like it.
.
.
.
Nicole was a trooper. There was opportunity – oh, plenty of opportunity – but she didn’t laugh at us while we worked out the kinks.

She didn’t laugh – but she did smile a lot – that patient “the old guys are doing the best they can” smile.
.
By the time we got to the ocean everyone was smiling. It wasn’t all fairways and greens, there was a tree involved, but Morrie and I began to challenge Nicole. We were happy golfers.
.
.
.
But I do have to admit – the big hit of the day didn’t come from a driver or an iron. The big hit of the day was our shorts.
.
This was a great weekend of golf – not always pretty – but always fun. It was the way golf should be.
Come play golf with me.
