Golf Story: The Prince is Moving Up –
By Wayne Halm –
An old friend is moving Up in the world –
The Prince Course, located at Princeville on the north shore of Kauai, is moving up socially – she will soon be out of my league. In spite of the masculine name, I‘ve always thought of The Prince as a “she”.
At the end of the year The Prince Course will close. For her this is a good thing – she is not being put out to pasture. My lady will receive a big time facelift and a sparkling new wardrobe, and then reopen as an exclusive private club. Unless I have a J.K. Rowling type event, I will not be able to afford the private club – so my old friend and I will part ways.
Is it weird to include a golf course among your friends? Perhaps it is, but we have a lot of history. I’ve spent more time with her than with many of my human friends. In the mid 90s she and I entertained frequently – sometimes twice a day. We closed a great many deals together. We were good and she always held up her end. It really was a long and wonderful office romance.
Now, she is being promoted up to the Board Room – and I have no doubt but that she will dazzle and charm those folks too.
So, on December 21st 2014 I took Danny Lyons and played The Prince for likely the last time. “Coach Sally” and “Coach Linda” accompanied us.

I didn’t think of our round as “a last fling with an old girlfriend”, I just wanted to say good-bye and wish her well. But it didn’t feel like either. We quickly settled into our old rhythm and were working together again. On some holes she let me shine – and on others she stroked Danny’s ego by making me look like a complete fool. The laughter started and soon Danny would have bought anything we were selling. I felt “the old comfort”. That’s simply the way she is, don’t fight the numbers, just take what she gives you – and she will give you a good time.
Toward the end I did get a little sentimental – I just couldn’t help it.
.
I like being me – people need to have something really special to make me envious. But I think I will be envious of the new club members – The Prince Course is that special.
Come play golf with me.

For those of you who don’t have these images burned into your brain, I will include the Tee-view from each hole below. I know it doesn’t do my girl justice, it’s a “you had to be there” sort of thing.

We will miss the Prince!!!
