Round Played: with Kris Warren, Doug Costales, and Tyler Burns –

What could be more fun than a Scramble Golf Tournament? –

On February 25th 2017 I played in the HLTA Golf Tournament at the Hokuala Golf Club on Kauai.  The tournament drew a large field and we had to start early.

It was 65 degrees … so don’t laugh at the jackets on the “Wimpy Hawaiians”.

HLTA is an acronym for Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association I want to thank Ike Cockett (General Manager at the Koloa Landing Resort) for inviting me to play.

I also want to mention that Fran Roach (General Manager of the Hokuala Golf Club) and his staff did an excellent job of producing this tournament.

This was a charity event … and supposed to be FUN.  So Dickie Chang and I bet on who wore the best outfit.  He claimed victory but I contested that.  What do you think?

Scramble golf tournaments are fun.  They are fun in large part because they are a team effort.  Let me introduce my team.

Kris at the Hokuala Golf Club on Kauai

Kris … this boy hits the ball a long way.

.

Doug at the Hokuala Golf Club on Kauai

Doug … he swings a mean wedge.

.

Tyler at the Hokuala Golf Club on Kauai

Tyler … this lad can putt.

.

Wayne at the Hokuala Golf Club on Kauai

Then there was me … more or less the team photographer.

.

But I think I did pretty well as the photographer.

.

We had a solid team … most of the bases were covered.  The only area where we came up short was in “mulligans”.  And I have to take the blame for that …

I allowed Sumeria to deviously distract me …sorry guys.

On my way to get the mulligans I allowed Sumera to deviously distract me …sorry guys.

.

We played well.  But, short on mulligans, sometimes we had to dig deep and do things the old fashioned way.  On the par4 14th hole Doug chipped our third shot in … from nearly a hundred yards out.

Yeah, that is worthy of a picture.

Yeah, I think that is worthy of a picture.

.

Then on the difficult 18th, after Kris’s booming drive, I hit a wedge shot right up next to the pin for a tap in birdie.  Yep, we had our moments … just not at the prize table.

We didn’t win the tournament.  But my shorts got more complements than Dickie’s shirt, so that’s a win of sorts.  And we did have more laughs than putts (thanks in large part to Tyler’s putter).  Yeah, this was FUN … it was the way golf should be.

So to answer my question “What could be more fun than a scramble golf tournament?” … maybe a few more mulligans.

I have a 2017 goal of playing golf with 100 people I haven’t met.  Kris, Doug, and Tyler are numbers 6, 7, and 8.  Want to be in that number …

Come play golf with me.

    • Aloha Jim,
Yes, scrambles are a lot of fun. We did good things, just not enough of them. And I know I spoiled my “look” with the jacket … “damned cold”.

  1. Hey, wait a minute Wayne. Had I known you would post my name, with photo, on your blog, I would have worn my outrageous golfing entire and played better. Ha ha! Thanks for the great day of golf and I hope you enjoyed the stogies! With regards to that lucky Chip shot, even a busted clock tells the correct time twice a day!

    • Aloha Doug,
Hahaha that was fun. Maybe we should schedule and “outrageous attire round”, that could be fun…give some thought to who else we should invite. — Twice a Day?? Do you mean you chipped another one in? I was laughing a lot but it seems I would have noticed that. — A Hui Hou, Wayne

  2. Aloha Wayne,

When I first saw that jacket you had on I thought you were playing golf over in Canada and wondered why you hadn’t called me. For what it’s worth, the duck shorts will always get my vote.

    Cheers
    Josh

    • Aloha Josh,
Live here long enough and you get sensitive to lower temperatures … okay, we over do it. But I was wearing shorts, I just had to.
