Round Played: with Lisa Vlooswyk –
By Wayne Halm –
This was competition … and I dug into my bag of tricks –
On February 13th 2017 I played The Club at Kukuiula with Lisa “Longball” Vlooswyk from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This was the third and final round in our “Lisa and Wayne Challenge”. Lisa’s husband, Anton, and her son, Luke, gain joined us … and we set out to have a good time on this beautiful golf course.

.
Lisa is a seven-time Women’s Long Drive Champion and has been featured on the cover of Golf Tips Magazine. She is nick-named “Lisa Longball” for a reason … it can be humbling to play with her. For more about Lisa read her website
The Club at Kukuiula is an extremely upscale private club. I want to thank Paul Horner (General Manager) and Ike Cockett (GM at Koloa Landing Resort) for arranging this round for us.
.
.
I was behind in our challenge, I needed some help … so I reached into my bag of tricks the night before.
.
.
We were first out … and even on Kauai that means you warm-up on the range early.
.
I hit a few range balls. But really about all “warming up” does for me is make me sweaty.

I soon retired to the lounge area and encouraged Lisa to hit more balls … maybe it would tire her out.
.
.
I’ve heard it said that “If you want fewer putts – hit the balls closer to the hole”. From the very first hole Lisa used that strategy.
.
After four I was down four … and it occurred to me that maybe I could “over stuff” Lisa at the on-course snack shop.
.
.
.
Lisa just kept pounding her Callaway Golf Epic Driver. It has something called “Jail Break Technology”. I don’t know exactly what that is …
.
.
On the back the amazing views got even better … but my scores didn’t. By the 12th I still hadn’t won a hole.
.
.
I tried letting the spectacular views distract Lisa, but she just stuck to her strategy of hitting greens and making putts. She was having a good round.
.
However, on the par5 18th hole Lisa lost her tee shot. It didn’t go left or right, she drove it completely through the dog-leg … but still it was a lost ball and I took advantage of it. I hit a fair drive, crushed my second, pitched up near the pin, and one putted …
I won a hole against Lisa “Longball”!!!! Yea Wayne !!!
.
This was a fun day on a beautiful golf course. And with Lisa and I both teasing each other, we definitely had more laughs than putts. Yeah, we all walked off smiling … it was the way golf should be.
I have set a 2017 goal of playing golf with 100 people that I haven’t met. I can’t count Lisa, Anton, and Luke, I already knew them, so the number still stands at 1. Want to be in that number …
Come play golf with me.
Lisa and I have played before on 2017-02-09 and 2017-02-08 and in February of 2014

Fantastic. Congrats on doubling down for 17 holes and winning it all on the 18th hole. What a great time the four of you had and thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Jim
Aloha Jim,
Thank you … it was a fantastic day. Lisa, Anton, and Luke are simply a joy to be around.
But Jim, can I admit something only to you? (Everybody else stop reading right now).
Lisa didn’t beat me on all 17 of those holes, on some I beat myself. I was trying to keep up with her long shots and was lucky to keep the ball on the course. I was trying to play her game and would have done much better to play mine.
I can par or birdie some of those holes … proof came on 18 when the pressure came off.
Some lessons are hard on the ego … but learning them can sure be FUN.
A Hui Hou,

I hear you brother. Mr Ego reeks havoc on all our games. I can only image how tough it was trying to keep up with Lisa. And having fun is what it is all about!
Cheers
Jim
Aloha Jim,
You’re right about every bit of it. And even now I smile about it.
A Hui Hou,
Wayne
Aloha Wayne,
Thata boy! Finishing in style. Nice birdie. The last hole can delete a lot of memories of the first 17 if done right. I didn’t quite implement that strategy when we played Kukui’ula.
Cheers
Josh
Aloha Josh,
Thank you … and you are exactly right. I would have been hard pressed to write about the first 17 hole without my notes.
Has Beth let you forget about the 18th yet?
A Hui Hou,
Wayne
Aloha Wayne,
Beth keeps those things in her back pocket just in case she needs them. I expect this one to resurface when we’re back on the course this summer.
Cheers
Josh
Aloha Josh,
Hahaha … yes, that’s just sort of the way wives are. Sally has an old story she likes to tell about me, I asked her how long she was going to tell that story. She answered, “Until you do something even dumber”.
A Hui Hou,
Wayne
