Round Played: with Matt, Kevin, and Alejandro –

By Wayne Halm –

Did you see the TV news pictures of the ominous skies, threatening clouds, and angry surf on Maui as Hurricane Lester passed 150 miles to the north?  They looked scary.  But I didn’t see any film crews on Kauai.

So I guess it is up to me to show you what conditions were like on Kauai as the storm passed – of course there is a golf course involved.

On September 3rd 2016 I played the Kiahuna Golf Club with Matt Kleefison, Kevin Pemberton, and Alejandro Moxey.  The storm was further away than the television implied … and we just felt the need.

We looked at this day as an unexpected gift and were determined to make the best of it.  Just a bunch of guys out on a golf course to have FUN.

Occasionally a few clouds drifted over, but not enough to affect the fun – don’t those look like fun putts?

But mostly we enjoyed sunny skies – and more fun putts.

The Kiahuna Golf Club is not on the ocean but you can see the ocean.  The course is pretty and has some old time ruins on the property.

The Portuguese House, some bits of Hawaiian history are lesser known.

The Waikomo Stream – I’m not sure why Matt wanted to play from the island, I didn’t see the advantage.

This was a great day.  There is something really satisfying about snitching a round of golf out of the jaws of a hurricane.  It was a lot of fun.

It brought out the “little boy” in all of us.

This was the way golf should be.

I have a 2016 goal of playing golf with 100 people that I don’t know.  Matt, Kevin and Alejandro are numbers 35, 36, and 37.  Want to be in that number?

Come play golf with me.

  1. Aloha Wayne,

You are some brave souls staring down that storm and heading to the course. Somehow you found a way to persevere and have fun. If those are what the storms are like in Kauai, I’ll take my chances golfing in one or two of them come December.

    Cheers
    Josh
