Status Report: Hokuala … A Rising Star –

By Wayne Halm –

On August 9th 2016 I visited an old friend.  My Lady is “having some work done”.

The front nine of the Ocean Course at Hokuala has been under renovation for months now.  I went to look at the progress … and I liked what I saw.  This is more than a facelift, it is a full body treatment.  And happily it is on schedule for a November 1st re-opening.

WARNING:  Some of the images in this post are graphic in nature.  Golfers who have played Kiele or Kauai Lagoons may find them disturbing.  Viewer discretion is advised.

To those who may say that posting pictures of My Lady during her “procedure” is in poor taste – I promise to post many more of her strutting in her new finery.

My Lady is getting new TifWay 419 Bermuda fairways.  No Paspalum for this girl, she’s getting the good stuff.

(Click on any picture for a larger view – then use the browser ‘back’ button.)

For now the fairways are being cut easy so the 419 can get a strong root.

My Lady has always had ample bunkers.  These are being firmed up and promise to be beautiful but fearsome charms.

New drainage is being installed.

Some already have their dressing of white G3 silica.

On November 1st My Lady will step out sporting tour quality TifEagle Bermuda greens from start to finish.

The TifEagle has a couple of more months of “growing in” to do, but it is looking good.

I expected the fairway, bunker, and green work – however, My Lady had a surprise for me.  She is also having some skillful surgery done around her edges.  Many of the enclosing bushes are being removed.

This is what the ninth hole looked like last year.

And now. This provided a more open feel to match the back nine.

Oh, and there is also a new clubhouse in the works.

Yes, the Ocean Course at Hokuala is having some work done.  And perhaps I’m a jerk for posting pictures of it.  But once the scars heal, My Lady will truly be The Queen of Kauai Golf.

I have set a 2016 goal of playing golf with 100 people I don’t know.  Playing with people I do know is causing me to fall behind … but I will catch up.  Right now the number stands at 34.  Want to be in that number?

Come play golf with me.

    • Aloha Jim,
Thank you. I’m getting itchy to play there myself. And Josh is coming out in December, so maybe we can get another opinion of the renovation results.

  1. Aloha Wayne,

I like the sounds of what they’re doing to your Lady. The pictures may be hard to look at now, but it will be worth the pain and suffering in the end. I like that they plan to open it Nov 1st, you’ll have a chance to do some test runs and break it in before Beth and I play it. Hopefully you will break in the fairways and greens and leave the bunkers and rough up to someone else.

    Cheers
    Josh

    • Aloha Josh,
Yes, we will have to put Hokuala on our play list. “Leave the bunkers and rough up to someone else”, that would be nice – but you know I can’t concentrate that long.
      A Hui Hou,
      Wayne
