Other Stuff: Kauai as a Destination –

By Wayne Halm –

Are you a U.S. citizen and considering a foreign vacation?  Allow me to present Kauai as an alternative.  It is sort of a foreign country – only easier.

Much easier.  From my point of view Kauai has some definite pluses verses a foreign vacation.  Let me tell you about a baker’s dozen of them.

No passport is required – unless your driver’s license is from one of those TSA non-approved states, then a passport might be a good thing.

No Customs hassles – okay, there is the Hawaii Agricultural form you must fill out on the aeroplane coming over and they want to X-ray you luggage on the way back.

No currency exchange is needed – you can spend good old American dollars on Kauai, lots of them.

You can drive on Kauai – a driver’s license and credit card will rent you a car.  You can drive comfortably here, we drive on the right side of the road and the traffic signs are in English, the street names are a different matter though.

You can eat on Kauai – most any exotic food you can think of can be found here, but there are lots of steaks, hamburgers, and pizzas too.

Coffee is served on Kauai – real American coffee, in fact there is even a Coffee Plantation here to visit.

You can drink the water on Kauai – it is fine right out of the tap, though I do frequently flavor it with Scotch Whisky.

You can speak English on Kauai – everyone will understand you, though what you hear back may contain some of those cute Hawaiian words.

You can choose your level of accommodations on Kauai – from campgrounds right up through the Koloa Landing Resort there is plenty for rent, search the Internet.

You can play in the clear ocean water on Kauai – surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, whale watching, fishing, sunset cruising, it’s all available.

You can legally get an Adrenaline Rush on Kauai – ride helicopters without doors and slide down zip lines (click here to read my blog post about doing this).  And when Linda and I build up enough courage, I will post about skydiving.

You can play golf on Kauai – there are some wonderful courses here, and if you play with me you will be featured on this blog.

You can also just veg-out on Kauai – relax on the beaches, by the pools, peruse the markets, or reward yourself with a Spa Treatment, you don’t have to do much at all.

One suggestion – if you come to Kauai, bring a camera.  And learn to use it before you come.  You will want pictures of yourself in the most magnificent scenery on Earth.

Come play golf with me.

  1. Love this! Clever post, Wayne. When I’m able to make it to Hawaii, Kauai will be a must stop! Enjoy all the Island has, you’re blessed to be living in one of there beautiful places on the planet.
    Cheers, Mike

    • Aloha Hanne,

It is a wonderful place. Occasionally headhunters (employment agents) call and ask, “If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?” I always answer, “I can live anywhere and I’m where I want to be.” – I hope you can see it sometime.

    • Aloha Beth,

Yes, Kauai is a wonderful place and I hope you can come. And I think you are right, Josh has been charmed. Next week I’m hosting a golf group from California, maybe I can get some more good pictures to post.

      A Hui Hou,
      Wayne
