Round Played: At Hokuala Golf Club –
By Wayne Halm –
On January 17th 2016 I played the Hokuala Golf Club Ocean Course. This was a lot of fun but it was not a conventional round – even by my standards. Things just kept changing.
Change #1 – I planned on going the course alone but my wife, Sally, decided to come out and walk along. She said her FitBit was hungry and she needed to give it steps. (She gave it over 20,000.)

Sally – this girl walks 40 miles a week, that’s more than I drive.
.
Change #2 – I expected to have to play as a single, but the starter asked if I wanted to play with Ron and Fran Schwarz. You bet I did! For me, golf is a social game. We played, we talked, we laughed, and Sally critiqued my tee shots.

Fran and Ron – these are great people.
.

Wayne, Fran, and Ron – this was a fun threesome.
.
Change #3 — On the 7th hole a single, Chris Reading, caught up and joined us. Chris fit right in and we played on as a foursome. (Sally marched along, took care of the flag, and commented on my putts.)

Chris seemed happy to join us and was definitely fun to have in the group.
.
Change #4 – After the 11th hole Fran stopped playing. She had gone on a boat ride the day before and the Pacific waves took a lot out of her. I missed her. When she stepped onto a tee box she started humming a waltz. She told me the waltz tempo resisted her tendency to over-swing. Now, I may have to learn a waltz.
Change #5 – I suppose it happens all the time, but I don’t remember it happening to me before – we caught up to a single. Graham (I’m sorry but I can’t find my note with his last name and contact info) was waiting for the foursome in front to clear the 14th green. He decided to join us. This was good, Graham impressed me, he was playing his 7th round in 5 days (he purchased Hokuala’s week pass). I could not play that often.

Here is out happy foursome – Chris, Wayne, Graham, and Ron.
.
Yes, this was an unconventional round. Things kept changing – but it was fun!

One thing is consistent on the Hokuala course – You can always tell who parred the signature 16th hole by the grins on their faces.
.
This was another great day on the golf course. Everyone just took what came along and had fun with it. It was the way golf should be.
I have set a 2016 goal of playing golf with 100 people that I haven’t met. Ron, Fran, Chris, and Graham were numbers 11, 12, 13, and 14. Want to be in that number?
Come play golf with me.

Aloha Jim,
Wow, that is high praise indeed. Thank you! I love to golf, meet people, and have fun – and if I make a putt or two along the way, that’s just icing on the cake. I too want you to be in that number, we have to work on that.

Aloha Wayne,
What a round! Much of the time things happen for a reason, and in this case, it sure sounds like it all worked out for the best. I look forward to joining you at Hokuala someday.
Cheers!

The images are breathtaking, Wayne. Sounds like you took all those changes and made them your own, adjusting beautifully. Fun times.
Best,
Silvia.
Aloha Silvia,
Thank you. I always try to have fun on the golf course. When I feel up to being serious, stressed, and frustrated – I stay home and write.
