Round Played: with Jerry and Janice Unger –
By Wayne Halm –
Sometimes the score just doesn’t matter –
On March 22nd 2015 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Jerry and Janice Unger from Coal City, Illinois. My Kauai buddy Danny Lyons joined us and we had a fun four-some. (Click on the pictures for a larger view – then use the browser ‘back’ button.)

.
Jerry and Janice just repeatedly struck the ball solidly. But to be blunt about it, Danny and I did not play well this day. It seemed we went from bunker to bunker to bunker – unless there was something worse in the way.

Sand play aside, we were on a beautiful golf course – in Hawaii – with great company. That is a sure-fire formula for a great time, and we had one.
.
A canyon runs between the 5th tee and green – it is filled with Mango trees. In the late summer feral pigs sometimes come down from the mountain and eat the fallen Mangoes. These are not boars, but farm pigs that have escaped and live in the woods. They are cute to watch.

Each Mango tree in the canyon produces hundreds of Mangoes – in contrast, my pampered tree in the back yard has TWO.
.

Last year the Mango trees got so tall the players could not see the green – grounds keepers had to cut some, but they are sprouting back already.
.
Of course out by the ocean I made every one pose for pictures. If you play golf with me it is simply going to happen. Besides, it is fun – just look at these smiles.

(A note about Danny: He lives on the northshore of Kauai at the Princeville Resort. He owns a condo there that he rents out to vacationers. The condo is pretty upscale – but take a look at his website anyway, it is fun to dream. The website is http://www.kauaidreamer.com )
This was a fun day on the golf course. Danny and I really sharpened our sand game, now we just have to work on the shots that put us in the bunkers. And we got to know, and laugh with, Jerry and Janice. Learning and laughing – that’s the way golf should be.
Come play golf with me.

Aloha Wayne,
Those are some great looking pictures my friend! I’ve heard a lot about the beautiful beaches in Hawaii, but the ones you spent the day on wasn’t what I had in mind! Always good to get some practice in though. I also love me a good mango, I think I’d like it there.
Cheers
Josh
Aloha Josh,
Thank you. On this day my irons seemed to have minds of their own – and greens just weren’t on their minds. Everyone else was too gracious to laugh at me, so I laughed at myself.
There will be other rounds – Come play golf with me.
A Hui Hou,
Wayne
