Round Played: with Danny and Linda Lyons –

By Wayne Halm –

We had so much fun the first time – We did it again.

On November 29th 2014 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Danny and Linda Lyons from Hanalei, Hawaii.  We had played before.

Danny and Linda -- We had played when they were visiting from Punta Gorda, Florida - We had so much fun they decided to move here - Well, maybe there was more to it than that - But we celebrated with a round of golf anyway.

Danny and Linda — We had played when they were visiting from Punta Gorda, Florida – We had so much fun they decided to move here – Well, maybe there was more to it than that – But we celebrated with another round of golf anyway.

My buddy, Jeff Nisenoff, from the Big Island joined us.  It had been a couple of years since I golfed with Jeff – his game had changed.

Jeff -- He said he hadn't taken lessons - but his game said otherwise.

Jeff — He said he hadn’t taken lessons – but his game said otherwise.

Sally, my wife, decided to ride along with me on this day.  As she put it, I think you might benefit from some “coaching”.

Sally -- Perhaps her most stinging coaching comment came on 17 - "Welcome to the water".

Sally — Perhaps her most stinging coaching comment came on the par three 17th hole – I hit a solid nine iron over the lagoon toward the green – the ball was still rising when she said –  “Welcome to the water”.

So four happy golfers and “Coach Sally’ started out onto the course.  Things went well for a few holes – but things changed.

The other three listened as Coach Sally shared her wisdom with me.

The other three listened as Coach Sally shared her wisdom with me.

Coach Sally's words - "Wayne, hit the ball all the way across the canyon."

Coach Sally’s words – “Wayne, why don’t you hit the ball all the way across the canyon – for once.”

The change? - Linda decided to join the "Coaching Team".

The change? – Linda decided to join the “Coaching Team”.

I felt good and thought I was doing well by the time we reached the ocean – because the coaches seemed happy.

Coach Sally said - "Wayne, I could watch you putt all day - on this hole."

Coach Sally said – “Wayne, I could watch you putt all day – on this hole.”

The challenging 14th tee is one of the places where the island is still growing, one golf ball at a time.  There I received some extremely sound coaching advice.

Coach Linda said - "Now Wayne don't try anything fancy. Just hit he ball onto the green."

Coach Linda said – “Now Wayne don’t try anything fancy.  This time just make the ball land on the island.”

Can you tell the difference between coaching me and just plain laughing at me? --- Neither could I.

Can you tell the difference between them coaching me and just plain laughing at me? — Neither could I.

But my par on the 16th hole changed the coaches attitudes toward me.  Maybe I would get some respect.

Both coaches smiled and agreed - "It's about time you listened to us."

Both coaches smiled and agreed – “It’s about time you listened to us.”

Coach Sally was persistent.  She didn’t give up on me.  She coached me even on the 18th hole – but she was kinder.

Coach Sally said - "Wayne, if you don't make this putt, the next one is a give-me - We're out of time."

Coach Sally said – “Wayne, if you don’t make this putt, the next one is a give-me – We’re out of time.”

So, did all of that coaching make me a better golfer?  Well, it made me a happier golfer anyway.  This was a great fun round – the way golf should be.

I mean who wouldn't be happy to have these two as coaches?

I mean who wouldn’t be happy to have these two as coaches?

Come play golf with me.
