Round played: with Guy Generaux and Gene Oliver –

By Wayne Halm –

Another round with a magazine editor — yeah, I would do this everyday.

On October 29th 2014 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Guy Generaux, Editor of Northwest Golf magazine and his friend Gene Oliver.  They are from the Seattle, Washington area.

Guy and Gene (Does anyone else think that Guy looks like a young Gene Hackman?)

Guy talked a lot about a course in Brewster, Washington called Gamble Sands (www.GambleSands.Com).  He praised the course for being ‘average golfer friendly’ and fun to play.  Yes, Guy thinks golf should be fun to play – you know he and I are on the same page.

Golf should be fun – and we made it fun on this day.

We turned the daunting 5th hole into a photo-op and smiled all the way through it.

A light hearted attitude can essentially take the lake out of play on the 8th hole.

The par three 14th hole can be as intimidating as it is beautiful – but fun things always happen there.

Gene Gene and I decided t o just hit the ball and take what we get.

Guy But Guy really wanted this - he 'over cooked' his tee shot - it bounced off the back of the green and rolled over the cliff - he dropped there - AND chipped it in -- FUN.

The 14th hole is gorgeous no matter which way you look at it - this is from the other side.

In our style of golf everyone wants everyone else to do well.  You feel good when someone hits a good shot – you share in the joy.

Guy and Gene Guy's chip-in still had us smiling when we reached this spot.

The famous lagoons did claim a couple of balls near the end.  But they didn’t get them all – we were still smiling.

The namesake lagoons.

Three happy golfers walked off the 18th green – this was fun golf – golf the way it should be.

Come play golf with me

  1. I frequently play golf with Guy & Gene and can attest that they always walk off the 18th green smiling, knowing that I once again have lost and need to pay for their beer at dinner.

    • Aloha Terry,
I am a little bit envious, Guy and Gene are fun to golf with. They had some form of bet going – fortunately I wasn’t part of it. Thanks for commenting.

  2. It is about 50 degrees and misty here in Seattle. We who regularly play with Guy and gene are jealous…. Guy chips in regularly. Count on him to perform that magic at least once a round. Looks like a beautiful course, and the weather is obviously awful.

  3. Aloha Pete,
Thank you. And yes, Guy’s chip opened my eyes and put a smile on my face – I’ve got to learn that little shot. The weather here is usually fantastic … but occasionally there are days (see my Newport, California post). However, that was a great day, Guy and Gene are fun to golf with.

    • Aloha,

Guy plays a fair game of golf – and he know some good jokes – but I don’t know if he taught high school or not. Sorry.
