Round Played: with Bob and Joan Boyll –

By Wayne Halm –

Who Buys Dinner?

Sometimes I will play in a Skins Game – but that is more a head game than a golf game.  Other than that I enjoy golf too much to bet on it.  However, others do.

On October 7th 2014 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Bob and Joan Boyll from Anthem, Arizona.  They bet each other dinner on low gross.

I have played with women like Joan before.  They march down the middle of the fairway, seldom get in trouble, and rarely miss a reasonable putt.  I was glad I did not bet with her.

Did "Mrs. Automatic" make this putt?

Did “Mrs. Automatic” make this putt?

Of course she made it.

Of course she made it.

It took a while for Bob and I to get control of our big sticks – there were some doubles in the beginning.  Bob tamed his driver sooner than I did.  It was the tenth hole before I hit a fairway – you don’t come back from that, I shot a 91.  Sometimes I only missed the short grass by a foot or two – but rough is rough and it usually costs a stroke.

Bob and I made the turn talking about fresh air, sunshine, and the beauty of the course – anything but our scores.  Joan? Well she just quietly marched on – 3 up on Bob.

The back nine was a different story – Bob and I woke up.  Pars were common and so were smiles – yeah, we took pictures.

The ocean holes are just so pretty - you have to smile

Of course the 14th hole tee shot can erase the smile - but not for long

On the 14th green the smiles return again

And the smiles remain for the rest of the round

Three happy golfers walked off the course.  While Bob took care of the clubs Joan added up the scores – her shoulders slumped.  “He beat me by two strokes,” she told me.  Then a mischievous smile crawled onto her face and she added, “I’ll just put dinner on his credit card.” — Golf the way it should be.

Come play golf with me.
