Round Played: with Phil Sokol, Lawrence Soko,l and Paul Ito –
By Wayne Halm –
Phil Sokol is a sports writer and Director of Operations at Sports Network in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. One of the things Phil writes is course reviews, I believe he will soon post a review of the Kauai Lagoons course on the Sports Network at http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=golf-m/misc/course_reviews/sokol.htm .
I’ll let Phil describe the course, he’s good at that, and I will tell you about our round.
On August 22nd 2014 we teed off at 1:00pm under partly cloudy skies. A two club trade wind kept things cool and interesting.
Phil’s son, Lawrence, joined us. Lawrence is a beginning golfer with a great big swing.
Paul Ito, PGA, Director of Golf at the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club filled out our foursome.
Phil is a better player than I am – still, I was right with him in ignoring the bunkers and aggressively going after the pins. Yes, we got our share of experience playing from the dense bunkers on the front and from the fluffy bunkers on the back.
By the time we reached the ocean, we had given the Jack Nicklaus design its due and backed off a bit. That generated a lot more smiles.
We kept our smiles even through the challenging 18th hole. Paul told me that during the recent annual cleaning, over 15,000 golf balls were removed from the lagoon – challenging. However, we did not contribute to next year’s count – and yes, we were smiling about that.
This was a good round – a good day to be playing golf on Kauai.
Come play golf with me.
