Round Played: with Lisa Vlooswyk –
By Wayne Halm –
I’ve been ‘out-classed’ off the Tee lately – but that has happened before. Back in February the Kauai Lagoons Golf Club in Lihue, Kauai hosted a round of golf for Lisa Vlooswyk – and they asked me to accompany her!
Yes, this was a big deal. Lisa is also know as “Lisa Longball”, she is a seven time Canadian Women’s Longball Champion, is a LDA Champion, and competes on the Canadian Women’s Tour. (For more about Lisa Vlooswyk visit http://www.LisaLongBall.Ca .)
I think the course PGAs didn’t want to be embarrassed by her. Lisa currently holds the Canadian Women’s Long Drive record at 350 yards 2 feet and 2 inches.
I was in way over my head – but not about to be embarrassed. I decided that we were going to have a good time – and we did. Still, secretly I worried – but it was wasted worry – every one of my second shots flew past her drives. Sometimes not by much, but they did. Yea me!
The Kiele Course at Kauai Lagoons was made for Lisa. It is on a resort but it is not a resort course, it is a Jack Nicklaus designed championship course. She seemed right at home with the over ravine, over water, and ocean side play. Some people comment that Jack designs courses for his big hitting buddies, and after watching Lisa effortlessly get to the greens I can see their point.
Lisa was a vivacious, humorous, and gracious playing partner. We laughed a lot. She seemed interested in all of the features along the course, the mango forest, the macadamia nut trees, the whales, the longest stretch of ocean holes in Hawaii, the nene, everything. She seemed to love it.
She was even kind enough to complement me on my bunker shots – I appreciated that. I really was getting out of the bunkers well – too often, but well.
We didn’t even let the ball devouring 18th hole get to us. We simply dropped another ball, chipped over the lagoon onto the green, and putted out. It was a fun round – the way golf should be.
We returned to the clubhouse laughing and joking – then had dinner that evening – I had made a friend. Golf can be good.
Come play golf with me.
