Round Played: with Matt Emery, his son Ryan, and Rick Schmidt –
By Wayne Halm –

On July 13th, 2014 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Matt and Ryan Emery of San Diego, California.  Rick Schmidt of Walnut Creek, California filled out our four-some.

The skies were overcast. An overnight rain left the greens a bit slow, but that was the only evidence – and we stayed dry.  A one club trade wind kept us cool and challenged.

This round was fun.  However, I fear we had more putts than laughs – the number of laughs was not the problem.  After a few holes my putts stopping just short of or just beside the hole became humorous in themselves.  I seriously considered stuffing money into the cup before I putted.

“Awe” was also plainly visible in this round.  Ryan Emery is good!  325 off the tee, an amazing wedge, and a solid putter – and the lad is taking it all to the College of the Desert (in Palm Springs) golf team this fall.  Ryan Emery.  I repeat that so you can remember the name – if you follow golf at all, I predict you will hear it again.

Rick and I developed a kinship early on – we will both be married 40 years next month!  Perhaps part of my problems on the course is that I have already used up so much good luck.

I suspect Matt taught his son the wedge shot.  They both get enough spin on the ball to ‘check-up’ on the greens.  I watched closely and tried to learn something – but mine continued to bounce and roll.

In spite of 18 swallowing half of our balls, we all walked off the course laughing and smiling – just look at the picture.  It was a fun round – the way it should be.

Come play golf with me.
