Round Played: with the Hatfields –
By Wayne Halm –

On June 21st, 2014 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Tom and Peggy Hatfield of Portland, Oregon. Their son, TJ, also played with us – and his son, Jack, rode along and agreed to take pictures.

Great weather, plenty of Hawaiian sunshine and cooling trade winds, followed us around the course.

This round was special – this was fun – this was golf the way it should be – this was family golf. And for five hours I was invited into the family. We cheered each others shots. Everyone wanted everyone else to do well and have fun – the last part worked, there were a lot of smiles and laughs.

Peggy took advantage of the forward tees. Her drives seldom caught up to TJ’s but she frequently matched mine. “Nice drive Mom,” just automatically came out of TJ’s mouth.

Tom and I hunted birds – the shots were there, it was up to us. He bagged one on the 8th hole, but I continued to come up empty. Still, our group had a birdie, and that was reason to celebrate – we stopped for lunch at the turn.

On the 17th tee Tom stopped and washed his golf ball – then promptly hit it into the lagoon. As I walked onto the tee box TJ commented to his Dad, “It’s just like washing the car.” I wanted to concentrate and tried to hold it in. Finally I wised up and joined the laughter, just got it out of my system. It was almost enough. My ball cleared the lagoon and bounced onto the edge of the green – then started slowly rolling back toward the water. We all loudly pleaded for it to stop, but it went in anyway – more laughter.

Yes, I much enjoyed this round. The Hatfield family shares my idea of golf. It should be fun – and we made it that way.

Come play golf with me.
