Ko Olina, Hawaii

On June 12th, 2014 I played the Kauai Lagoons course with Will and Amy Davis of Ko Olina, Hawaii. (Ko Olina is on the island of Oahu). They were vacationing by taking a cruise ship around the islands.

This couple are into my resort style of golf. We’re golf soul-mates. We just wanted to have fun – and we did. Bad shots were dismissed with an insincere, “Oh, too bad” and soon forgotten – I don’t remember many. Good shots were celebrated with, “who-hoos”, high fives, knuckle bumps, and struts – I remember a lot of that.

A warning to others that might play with them – Amy can putt. She covers that fact by chipping so close that she doesn’t often have to – but she can.

My wedge worked well too – on the ninth hole anyway. This is a long par 4 that plays even longer. I’ve seen pars on this hole, but only two that didn’t involve one putts. I one putted.

The famous Kauai Chickens (see photo below) were out in force on this day. As if on cue they would crow during Will’s backswing. He got used to it, but Amy and I nearly exploded holding in the laughter.

We all played the signature 16th hole according to the GPS machine’s suggestion. We hit 180 yard tee shots down the right side of the fairway. We chipped the remaining 100 yards onto the hill to the right of the green – and watched our balls roll out onto the green. We all missed our birdie putts, but made the next one. It’s a lot easier walking back up that hill knowing you’re going to write a par on the card.

This was a great day on the course. I dropped them off back at the ship – but I kept the memory of a really fun round.
